![]() ![]() Sooner or later it becomes apparent that the game is still the one note joke it’s always been, and no matter how many side quests and secrets there are there’s no way to hide that. ![]() Even with the addition of both light and heavy attacks there’s more skill and excitement in wending your way through a horde of zombies without fighting than there is in actually attacking them, which eventually makes the whole process seem slightly pointless.Īs usual the game tries to mix things up with a range of deranged human opponents and boss-like ‘psychos’ but the culture shock of coming up against an enemy that actually presents a challenge is often jarring, and humans encountered elsewhere on the map seem as curiously resistant to damage as the zombies are prone to it. The same issue applies to the on-foot combat, and although many weapons have their own unique animations and combos once you’ve tried them out a few times the novelty quickly wears off. The problem is you get access to some pretty powerful vehicles very early on and once you’ve blown up or barbecued one crowd of zombies the second or third time (okay, the 20th or 30th) it doesn’t seem quite that much fun. You can now combine vehicles as well though, from a cross between a steam roller and a motorbike (complete with additional flamethrowers) or an armoured car with a turret cannon.īecause of the game world’s increased size (a whole city now, instead of just a shopping centre) the vehicles are a simple necessity for getting around, but as you might imagine they’re also enormous fun simply to roll about with, massacring zombies by the hundreds. Although it still seems a shame that you can’t invent any yourself – just follow pre-scripted recipes. There are also ordinary guns and makeshift weapons lying around but the combo creations are where the real fun is to be had. If you want to fight them while wearing a suit of armour and hitting them with a leather handbag you can, although the less dangerous route is to make use of the game’s revised combo system – which lets you combine two different objects into a single more deadly weapon.ĭead Rising 3 (XO) – the Rollerhawg is more fun with a friend In fact despite the presence of zombies the game isn’t remotely scary, since the undead are used as nothing but a punchline in the game’s non-stop joke reel of extreme violence. The main characters are written relatively straight, with new protagonist Nick Ramos portrayed as an affable but nondescript everyman, but this certainly isn’t the transformation into a grim and gritty horror game that some feared. When first unveiled there seemed to be an attempt to give Dead Rising 3 a more serious tone, but happily that’s not really the case in practise. It’s about killing thousands upon thousands of zombies in the most inventive way possible, ideally while wearing as many ridiculous items of clothing as possible. What remains is still the same basic premise though: an open world zombie game where you must, well… the end goal is simply to escape the city but Dead Rising isn’t really about plot or even story missions. ![]()
